What is Outward about?
The game begins with the protagonist of the game, an inhabitant of the Cierzo city encountering a shipwreck off the coast of Cierzo. The protagonist is already on debts that have to be periodically paid to his ancestor in installments. The debt is referred to as the blood price in the game and affects every member of the protagonist’s family. The voyage was a means to repay the debt completely. However, due to unfavourable circumstances, the voyage remained incomplete as the ship drowned off the coast of his home city. Now, being penniless and hardly surviving the unfortunate incident, the protagonist is given only 5 days for paying off the debt to his ancestor and retain his family belongings from being confiscated. Now, players are given multiple ways to react to this unfortunate state of things. Here begins the journey of the player. They can free themselves from their bloodline by entering a new collective or joining the holy mission of elatt or through the heroic king of the Levant. Players are supposed to join any of these three factions. As they make their choice, the stalemate begins to crack and the mortal incidents start to take place. The main story comprises three stories going parallel to each other all of which lead to the final picture.
Gameplay
The game incorporates traditional gameplay elements similar to what we find in other role-playing video games. However, developers have added several survival aspects to the game, retaining its uniqueness and originality. For instance, having to carefully notice one’s hunger, thirst, fatigue, and warmth. Players also suffer from diseases such as colds or indigestion. As you play, you start to lose your health. Depletion of your health is also indicative of a variety of consequences, including being held captive by enemies or brought back by an NPC. Outward features an autosave system, which means the player can not manually save his score and get them back every time he dies and comes back. While the game incorporates a magic system, spells are tough to obtain. Players have to increase their performance rate and stats and learn skills as they progress through the game by completing several side quests or getting trained. Completing quests successfully give multiply results. The player’s success or failure in completing the quests affects his game considerably and also determines how the story would progress.
